Volleyball: How to Customize Volleyball Net Heights for Better Learning

Dick Moss, Editor, PE Update.com

A volleyball net's regulation height makes it difficult for shorter players to learn many volleyball skills. This is especially true for grade school children,

For example, a student who can't jump high enough to clear the net will not be able to spike or block the ball.

Fortunately, a quick trip to the hardware store will provide you with all the equipment you need to adapt the height of your volleyball nets.

Changing Volleyball Net Heights
Standard D-clamps, available at any hardware store, will allow you to easily change the height of your nets.

Place a thin piece of wood between the clamp and your uprights to increase grip and prevent the paint from being damaged, then tighten the clamp. The ends of the net can then be hooked to the clamps. Change the position of the clamps to lower or raise the height of the net.

What Height is Appropriate?
How do you determine the net height that's most appropriate for your students? One way is to have your tallest student stand beside the net with an arm upraised. Set the top of the net at the level of his/her wrist. This will place the net at a height that should allow your smaller players to spike, block and serve correctly, while still providing a challenge to your taller students.
