PEDAL-POWERED GENERATORS

Here's an interesting project you can undertake with your students that will combine science, shop and PE class. The website below provides plans for making your own pedal-powered generator that using a stationary bicycle human-power to generate electricity. There is a link specifically for teachers; a video that shows the generator in action - powering a television; a green virtual gym that links users of the generator; many examples of science projects you can perform;and lots of other information. The plans cost $50 and the parts for the entire unit can be purchased at retail prices for $230…but there are lots of ways to reduce the costs, for example, by recycling an old bicycle.

    A series of one-legged exercises that can be performed quickly and are highly specific to running. Can be performed with stretch tubes so are excellent for physical education classes or varsity teams.
  • XC Running: An Intense Warmup Routine for XC & Distance Running Races
    A distance running warmup that includes a three-minute hard repetition can be more effective than the traditional jog-drills-and strides routine.
