Strength Training: Where to Lower the Bar in the Bench Press

Dick Moss, Editor

Here's a bench press tip that will help you be more specific when developing your chest muscles.

When lowering the bar, bring it to the part of the chest you are attempting to develop. For example, if you're trying to develop the upper chest, lower the bar to the upper portion of the chest. If you want to emphasize the lower chest, lower the bar to the lower portion of the chest.
