Resources: "Science of the Winter Olympics" Lesson Plans for Physical Education Class

Dick Moss, Editor, PE Update.com

NBC and Lessonopoly have developed an excellent resource called “Science of the Olympic Winter Games.”

It provides lesson plans for a number of Winter Olympic sports, including “Slapshot Physics: Hockey,” “Aerial Physics: Aerial Skiing,” The Science of Skis,” “The Science of Snowboarding” and many more.

The lesson plans include fun classroom activities and are appropriate for students in grades 6-9. However, you might find some nuggets for students of any age.

Each topic is accompanied by downloadable lesson plans and a companion video. Unfortunately, the availability of the videos appears to be limited by geography - for example, they won't play here in Canada. However, they should be OK in the U.S., and hopefully other countries as well.

The lesson plans are available for anyone to download, regardless of their location.

Activity Example
One example of a fun activity? Using a swivel office chair to demonstrate the angular momentum and torque experienced in aerial skiing.

Where to Find
