Gymnastics: Letter Hop Sheets

Dick Moss, Editor, PE Update.com

Letter Hop Sheets are light-colored vinyl sheets that provide pre-school through middle school students with a fun way to practice their hopping and balance abilities.

How to Create
With permanent markers, print the letters of the alphabet on sheets of vinyl. The sheets should be at least 2' x 3'.  If vinyl isn't available, you can also use old, cut-up bed sheets.

How to Use
While standing on one foot on the sheet, have your students:

  1. Hop on each of the letters that spell their name.
  2. Hop on each of the lower-case letters, then the upper-case letters.
  3. Hop out the answers to certain physical education questions, or questions pertaining to other subjects. For example:
  • What are the muscles on the front of your thighs?
  • Who invented the light bulb?

If you don't have enough sheets for the entire class, one or two can be used as part of a gymnastics circuit.
