Basketball/Coaching: High-Five Leader Assignment

Basketball/Coaching: High-Five Leader Assignment

Dick Moss, Editor, PE Update.com

If you're looking for a way to keep your basketball team's bench players involved in games, try this idea from Geno Auriemma, the head coach of the University of Connecticut women's basketball team.

Auriemma assigns one reserve or bench player the job of high-fiving the rest of the team after every successful three-point shot.

You could do the same using players who are injured, or rotate the assignment among the players who don't see much floor time. Alternatively, it could be a job for a team manager.

Why It's Useful
This is a great way to develop team spirit and improve your squad's energy and momentum during a game. When your players look over at the bench and see their teammates high-fiving like crazy, they'll feel more confident and enthused. And, of course, this display of enthusiasm and support will also fire up the crowd.

Positive Feedback
You could also use this idea to provide positive feedback for aspects of the game you've been emphasizing. For example, you could request high-fives for taking a charge, scoring on a fast break, making steals etc.
