Fundraising: Cakewalk Fundraiser

Dick Moss, Editor, Physical Education Update.com

The Cakewalk fundraiser is an excellent way to raise money from your student population.

To How To Organize
Purchase some large slab cakes at a Costco or commercial bakery. These cakes can be cut into squares that you can sell for $1.00 to $2.00 each.

This event requires the permission of your principal, because it takes place during class-time. First, make an announcement the day before the event to ensure that your school's students show up with some money.

Announce it again on the morning of the event. As soon as classes start, volunteers roll carts containing the cakes to every classroom in the school. Students are allowed to purchase a piece of cake that they can eat during class.

Cost is a $1.50 per piece of regular cake or two dollars for a specialty cake like Black Forest. You'll have to establish the size of your cake squares based on the price of the slabs of cake and the amount of profit you hope to make. Just be sure to make the pieces large enough to be attractive to your student customers.

Start off with a conservative number of cakes. If you run out, you send someone to purchase extras or run another Cakewalk later in the year.

Example
The organizers at Lockerby Secondary School in Sudbury, Ontario generally make between $200-$300 per Cakewalk within their school of 950 students. Their latest fundraiser was organized to purchase outdoor benches for students to sit on during lunch hour.
