1. Editor's Note

By the way, I did an article count yesterday, and holy cow! PE Update.com now contains over 2100 articles and rising! That's well over 3200 pages of content! And we'll keep churning out new articles, blogs and newsletters, so keep tuning in!

October 2, 2008
For example, here are some articles that were added to PE Update.com in the last two weeks. There's an article on a workout variation used by Michael Phelps; how your athletes injuries may be caused by wearing flip-flops; a drink you can make using only fruit and water; a sport psychology exercise involving posters and team goals; and a way to relieve muscles cramps by pinching the upper lip. And, if you're a basketball coach, be sure to read the article describing a better way to improve your players' conditioning - it's new and it's extremely effective.

The above articles are for PE Update members only. But how about free stuff? This newsletter includes links to a video clip that illustrates the effects of sport psychology focus and keyword training; links to our blog in which I discuss an issue that is being ignored in the election campaigns; and a free article that describes a way to pep up running workouts when you're working in a field, park or your school grounds.

This newsletter is free, but most of the content on PE Update.com is for members-only, including instructional videos, the discussion group, over 2000 articles that you can read, print and email... and much more.

If you're not already a member of the PE Update.com website, then join up today!! You can get more information here: PE Update Membership Information

I hope you enjoy this issue!

2. From the Web

SPORT PSYCHOLOGY DEMONSTRATION FROM "FOR LOVE OF THE GAME"
The movie, For Love of the Game, provides a great example of using cue words to improve mental focus and concentration. At the start of this video, you can see baseball pitcher, Billy Chapel, using his cue words "Clear the mechanism" to induce a state of enhanced concentration and exclude outside distractions. It's commonly known as "The Zone." At the end of the video, tired and tense and near the end of a no-hitter, his cue words fail him, but it's a great way to show your students the effect of mental training.
