Physical Education Tips of the Week #45

Dick Moss, Editor, Physical Education Update

1. Editor's Note

Working with track athletes, as I do, sun block is a necessary item in my coaching kit. But I hate applying the stuff. It's yucky and leaves your skin feeling sticky and uncomfortable. But I have finally

found some sunscreen that I hate less than the others. It sprays on with a hand pump and comes out in liquid form, so it spreads easily. It's called Hawaiian Tropic Sport 30. (I have no stake in passing this along - I don't even own stock in the company). If you're sick of applying sunscreen, this stuff is better than most. By the way, don't make the mistake of buying the Kids 30 for your own use. I made that mistake and it's not the same - the kids version contain a number of fruit extracts that give off a very sickly smell.

At any rate, this stuff is worth a try. Do you know of something better? Let me know.

This week, we published a mix of research and practical information: A study that confirms that batting machines produce more break in both curveballs and fastballs than human pitchers; an article on the dangers of showing your emotions during a game; and several ways to make running activities more appropriate for your physical education classes.

How about free stuff? This newsletter also provides links to a video about the Kenyan running system and how they produce so many world class athletes. There's a link to the weekly blog, in which I provide an update on the life of Jim Morris, the subject of the sports movie "The Rookie." And finally, the Free Pick of the Week is the article on group running equalizers for your physical education classes. It's so timely that I thought I'd make it temporarily available to non-members.

This newsletter is free, but most of the content on the website is for members-only, including instructional videos, the discussion group, almost 2000 articles that you can read, print and email... and much more.

If you're not already a member, I highly recommended that you join!! Get more information here:

2. From the Web

BORN TO RUN - KENYA

Here's an excellent video on the Kenyan distance running system. Aside from its inspirational value, there are four points I'd like you to note.

  1. The primitive facilities on which these world class athletes train. The next time your runners complain about your facilities, tell them that many of the best Kenyans train on dirt tracks.

  2. The role of successful role models and mentors in the system. Starting as far back as Kip Keno, successful athletes have provided motivation, experience, and a sense of belief in themselves that has benefited upcoming runners.

  3. At the start of the video, you can see the kids playing running games at school recess. See how active their recess is.

  4. Watch the segment about Sally Barsosio at 11:25 of the video, and the comment by legendary coach, Brother Colm O'Connell, that many Kenyan children, even to this day - run barefoot. To me, a background of barefoot running is the basis for the efficient, springy mid-foot contact that most Kenyan runners naturally incorporate into their technique. Watch the elite runners. I didn't notice a single heel-runner in the group.

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO JIM MORRIS FROM "THE ROOKIE?"
The Rookie is a fun sports movie about a real person. Jim Morris went from 35-year old science teacher to a pitcher in the major leagues, because of a bet with his high school baseball team. But what is he doing now?
