Dick Moss, Editor, Physical Education Update

1. Editor's Note

Well, it has been four days since I played in our annual old-man's basketball tournament. I still can't walk, but fortunately, I CAN type. So, get ready for the latest edition of PE Tips of the week.

Physical Education Tips of the Week #44
May 8, 2008
This week, we published some interesting articles: A hockey article exposes the amount of time players actually touch the puck during games; a tennis article reveals how many steps a pro takes per shot compared to recreational players; and the golf article discusses the mysteries of compression rating and how that can affect your game.

This newsletter also provides free links to a web page that will provide your students with free bookmarks as an incentive for creative activities related to fitness. There's a link to the weekly blog, in which I discuss an alarming new activity called "The Choking Game," along with ways to identify students who may be participating. And finally, the Pick of the Week is a game for health class that will help students review the basic muscle groups.

This newsletter is free, but most of the content on the website is for members-only, including instructional videos, the discussion group, almost 2000 articles that you can read, print and email... and much more.

If you're not already a member, I highly recommended that you join!! Get more information here:

If you aren't ready to join yet, there's lots of free content on the website and in these newsletters!

3. New Additions to the Websites

Here are the Articles that have been added to the websites this week.
These articles are available only to PE Update members.

  • Golf: Golf Ball Compression - Unlocking the Mystery
The compression ratings on golf balls can affect your success on the course. Here's what the ratings mean.

  • Hockey: Possession Time in Games is not Enough to Develop Skills
Games are a poor place to learn hockey skills because players touch the puck for only about 60 seconds over the course of a typical game.

  • Tennis: Recreational Tennis Players Should Take More Steps Per Shot
Professional tennis players take 3-4 times more steps per shot than recreational players. Includes a coaching cue to improve footwork.

The PE Update website has 191 other articles on these three topics! Become a member and you can read them today! Click Here!
