2. From the Web

RECESS REVIVAL

The Canadian Intramural Recreation Association (CIRA) of Ontario is a true treasure-trove of resources for physical educators. Their website provides tons of information on ways to keep kids active and fit while having fun.

The CIRA website provides a free guide to improving the activity level of children during recess. Called "Recess Revival," this 21 page eBook covers everything from lining your tarmac to playground rules to equipment to involvement strategies.

You can download the free eBook at: Recess Revival

3. From the Discussion Forum

Here's a great idea from the discussion forum. It's from Jill in Alberta, Canada. The topic was, How do you encourage students to stay active after school hours. By the way, Jenn is the first winner of the best discussion forum post contest.

"I give extra credit points to kids who do a set number of minutes of extra activity outside of school. I give them credit for just about anything that keeps them off the couch. The Extra Credit Sheets must be signed by parents/guardians. I also have "challenges" for each sport we do in class.

I give students a grade of 100 when they are able to demonstrate that they have accomplished the challenge. My challenges are things like doing the spider (a dribbling activity) in basketball or a series of volleyball skills in a row without a miss. I also give them credit when they teach it to another student. I teach fifth and sixth graders. I hope this helps!"

Monday Morning Musings on the World of Sports, Coaching & Physical Education from Editor, Dick Moss.

Your editor watched the first half of the Super Bowl with his women's running team. He answered some interesting questions about the game ("That's not mascara under his eyes.") Here's the link to the blog: //www.physicaleducationupdate.com/peblog/

    6. Pick of the Week

Each week, I'll highlight an article that I think is really useful. The article will be available to non-members of the website for a week, and to members forever!

This week's pick is: Fitness - Determining Exercise Intensity Using Pedometers

Pedometers are increasingly being used in physical education classes. One of the criticisms of pedometers is that, while they will measure the number of steps taken, they do not measure intensity of exercise. However by measuring the number of steps taken over a period of time, you can estimate the level of intensity of that exercise. Here's how - the article includes a chart that will help you estimate level of intensity.
