Dick Moss, Editor

1. Editor's Note

As many of you know, the PE Update website is now in its preview phase and most PE Digest subscribers have been provided access to PE Update. If you haven't received your access email (spam filters sometimes block my emails), be sure to let me know.

The Prize - containing over 40 ideas, techniques, tips and coaching cues for sprinters, hurdlers and anyone wanting to get faster!
The Prize - containing over 40 ideas, techniques, tips and coaching cues for sprinters, hurdlers and anyone wanting to get faster!

The discussion forum is also now active. I'll keep nagging about this because the forum's potential for providing information, support and a sense of community is huge. We've already received some excellent posts (you can see one member's excellent idea in the "From the Discussion Forum" section below.

To encourage more discussion forum activity, I'll be giving out a prize every two weeks, for the best discussion forum participant over that period. The prize will be an eBook, "Tricks of the Trade for the Sprints, Hurdles and Relays." It's an excellent resource whether you're a track coach, teach a track unit, or just coach sports in which speed is a factor. It's over 100 pages long and is normally a $12.95 value. And you'll get it for free if you submit the best forum post! (The forum, by the way, is restricted to PE Update members).

So start posting away!!

I hope you enjoy this issue!

3. From the Discussion Forum

Here's a great idea from the discussion forum. It's from Jenn in Alberta, Canada.

"...this idea .... is so helpful to me throughout the course of a day with my 11 classes of P.E. students that I wanted to share it! Many of you may already be using this.

When my students need to determine who goes first or if the ball was really out of bounds, etc. I have them do "rock, paper, scissors". Before they finish, they are usually laughing. If there was any tension beforehand, it has usually diminished. I see them using this on the playground and all through the school too."

Are you a PE Update subscriber with ideas to share? Well post them to the discussion group at: Forum (For PE Update members only)

    5. From the PE Update Blog

Monday Morning Musings on the World of Sports, Coaching & Physical Education from Editor, Dick Moss.

Fifteen-passenger vans have long been used by school teams, but that practice is quickly coming to an end due to safety concerns about their design.

The editor discusses his feelings about the horrific accident in New Brunswick that left seven basketball players and the coach's wife dead. He also mentions a safer alternative to the 15-passenger van. Here's the link to the blog: //www.physicaleducationupdate.com/peblog/
