Physical Education Tips of the Week #27 January 10, 2008

Dick Moss, Editor

1. Editor's Note

There has been a bit of a delay in getting PE Digest subscribers access to the new PE Update website. It figures - nothing is as simple as it seems, and there have been some problems in coordinating the two databases. But I've heard from our webmaster that the transfer should be be complete soon. I'm hoping by the end of the week. So, don't try logging in yet - you'll receive an email telling you when it's ready for you.

Finally next week, those of you who haven't updated their subscription to this newsletter will receive your final request. After that, we'll be sending PE Tips of the Week notices only to readers who are on our new database. I sure hope you'll join us!

You can do it right now by clicking the following link:

I hope you enjoy this issue!

2. From the Web

A Little Inspiration Are you depressed now that you're back at school after the holidays? Do you need some inspiration? Then take a look at this video. It's affirmation that dreams do come true and that looks can be deceiving.

I've seen this clip many times and every time it gives me goosebumps. By the way, it's not a sports clip, but I think the lessons it teaches apply to any human endeavour.

I don't want to ruin this for you, so there's a note about it at the bottom of the newsletter.

3. Freebies

If you live in Canada and have students or children in grade five (or 10 years old), check out the Canadian Ski Council's Grade 5 Snow Pass program. They can get three free lift tickets, and sometimes an additonal ticket for the following year. Apparently, there are also discount coupons for lessons and equipment rentals. Might be a great idea for a field trip! Check out the following link: http://www.snowpass.ca/

    6. Pick of the Week

Each week, I'll highlight an article that I think is really useful. The article will be available to non-members of the website for a week, and to members forever!

This week's pick is: "Group Up" Strategy Keeps XC Teams Together During Practice

It can be difficult to develop team spirit during cross-country running practices if your runners have widely varying levels of ability. Because many practices take place on long loops and trails, runners can become spread out and may have only occasional contact with each other. The Group-Up Strategy makes such practices more team-oriented by allowing most of your them to meet for recovery intervals.

This article includes a video. For more information, click the link.
