Track - Use Flip Flops as Track Spike Protectors

Dick Moss

There are two problems with the wearing tracks spikes on hard surfaces. The first is that it's not comfortable. The second is that it can dull your spikes. As a result you'll often see runners looking like ducks as they heel-walk over the asphalt apron of their track.

Fortunately, one of my grade 10 runners has found a simple solution to this problem. She steps into a pair of swimmers' flip flops--the type with a bumpy surface and Velcro straps that connect over the top of the foot.

The flip flops protect the spikes from becoming dull, but their bumpy surface prevents them from being damaged by the spikes. They can be put on in a jiffy and make walking on hard surfaces more comfortable.
