Volleyball: Setter Placement - Give a Margin for Error

Dick Moss, Editor

Does your team miss a lot of passes to the setter—especially passes that fly into or over the net? If so, you might examine the location of your setter.

Most setters are placed right beside the net. This is the ideal location for delivering quick sets to hitters and for flexibility in running different attack patterns. However, this location provides no margin for error when passing the ball to the setter—any long pass ends up in or over the net.

Move Your Setter
If getting the ball to the setter is your team's problem, try moving your setter farther from the net—especially if your offensive system is a basic one. You may not be as effective on quick sets, but your setter will be able to correct for long passes, and your passers may relax a little, knowing they don't have to be perfect on every pass.
