Games - Paper Race

Dick Moss, Editor, Physical Education Update

You'll dip into your paper recycling bin for the following activity. It's a great way to get your students running without them even realizing that they're working.

Setup
Establish a large play area using cones to determine your boundaries.

Give each student a sheet of regular (used) 8.5" x 11" paper. Have them hold the paper to their chest and tell them that if they run fast enough, they can take their hands off the paper, and air resistance alone will make it stick to them.

How to Play
Have everybody practice a few times, then, prepare to play. On your signal, everyone begins to run, holding their paper to their chest. When you shout, "Hands!" they drop their hands and continue running. If their paper drops, then stop running, but continue walking. The last student with a paper on their chest is the winner.

Extra
There's a certain speed your students will have to reach (depending on wind conditions), but the real challenge is keeping the paper attached when they make turns. This will lead to lots of funny situations when students reach the play area boundaries.
