Wrestlers Should be Within an Arm’s Length Before Beginning a Single or Double Leg Takedown

Wrestling: Shooting the Legs - How Close Should You Be?

Dick Moss

If your wrestling students lack power when they shoot a single or double leg, it's likely they are beginning their move from too far away. In order to explosively lift the opponent they must be close enough to make contact before fully extending their legs.

Coaching Cue
Here's a coaching cue for beginners. It will help them determine how close they must be in order to shoot an opponent's leg.

Simply put, they must be within an arm's length of the opponent before starting a single or double leg tackle. Since the arms are roughly the same length as the legs, this will ensure powerful contact with
the opponent's legs and the ability to lift upwards explosively.
