Field Events: Standing Shot Put is a Good Predictor of Competitive Performance

Dick Moss, Editor, PE Update

You're teaching a group of novice throwers who have yet to learn the full shot put glide technique. What's a quick way to predict their potential once they learn the full technique?

The easiest way is to simply have them perform a maximum standing shot put. In general, the standing shot put will account for 90% of the distance they could toss with the full glide technique.

In the standing technique, your thrower assumes a position sideways to the direction of the put and completes the movement from this starting position.
