Fun Stuff for Physical Education #91
February 25, 2010 1. Editor's Note Welcome to the latest issue of Fun Stuff for PE! I've had to write this newsletter very quickly. Why? Because the Winter Olympics are on television. They're being shown 24/7 here in Canada and I really hate to miss a second. Yes, I have bags under my eyes and I desperately need a shower, but that's the price of being a Olympaholic. What free content will you find in this issue? There are also many free resources on the PE Update.com website, including more than 40 sample articles, a links page, the latest PE-related news and headlines, the PE Blog archives and the Fun Stuff newsletter archive. For those of you who are PE Update.com members, this issue includes a list of the latest articles added to the website. I hope you enjoy this issue! Dick Moss, Editor 2. From the Web/Free Resources SCIENCE OF THE WINTER OLYMPICS LESSON PLANS Here's a website that provides free lesson plans explaining the science involved in a number of Winter Olympic sports, including "Slapshot Physics: Hockey," "Aerial Physics: Aerial Skiing," The Science of Skis," "The Science of Snowboarding" and many more. One caveat: the videos won't download in Canada, but hopefully other countries are OK. And the lesson plans can be downloaded regardless of your location. You can download the free lesson plans from the following web-page: http://www.lessonopoly.org/svef/?q=node/9086 3. New Additions to the Website Here are the Articles that were added to the PE Update website over the past two weeks. A fitness routine, using key elements from a number of different sports, that you can perform in your classroom or in physical education classes when no gym is available. Several Winter Olympics activities that physical education students can simulate in your gym. A printable certificate that rewards students who have completed the field hockey unit in your physical education class. A website that provides free lesson plans explaining the science involved in a number of Winter Olympic sports. A LESSON FROM THE WINTER OLYMPICS - DON'T REGRET TAKING A RISK A number of Olympic athletes have failed to win a medal. But if that "failure" was the result of taking a risk in order to improve performance, then kudos to them. http://www.physicaleducationupdate.com/peblog/ To see the PE Update Blog archives, go to: 5.
