Fun Stuff for Physical Education #71
April 9th, 2009
Dick Moss, Editor, Physical Education Update.com

1. Editor's Note

I've been planning to do some experimenting with a sale price for PE Update.com (not with the Fun Stuff for PE newsletter...it's free). And with the economy in a full-bore recession, now's the time. So, in the next newsletter, I'll be announcing a significant reduction in price! Stay tuned! (If you're an existing subscriber, don't worry, we'll take care of you. You'll be contacted soon, so check your email).

What's in this issue of the Fun Stuff Newsletter? Our free content includes a link to free downloadable teaching manuals for a number of sports - courtesy of the British Royal Navy! There's a link to our blog, in which I discuss why the NCAA basketball championships are better than their NBA counterpart; and our free article this issue is a fun lead-up game called Sardine Soccer.

And for PE Update members, here's what we've added to the website since the last issue: a baseball study on gripping the bat; an article and video link on using Dance Dance Revolution in your PE classes; the Royal Navy Action Packs; a sport psych article on the motivational effectiveness of emails versus phone calls (it's surprising); a tennis article on using hand signals with your doubles partner; and a travel article on using Hotwire to book team rooms.

While the Fun Stuff newsletter is free, most of the content on PE Update.com is for members-only, including instructional videos, the discussion group, over 2000 articles that you can read, print and email... and much more.

If you're not already a member of the PE Update.com website, then join up today!! To get more information, watch our video tour at: PE Update Video Tour

I hope you enjoy this issue!

Dick Moss, Editor

Research proves that a tight bat grip does not help batters hit the ball harder.

  • Fitness (Video Link): Dance Dance Revolution Encourages PE Participation
The video game, Dance Dance Revolution, can be used in physical education classes to increase student interest and motivation.

  • Resources: Royal Navy Action Packs
The British Royal Navy provides free introductory manuals for a number of sports.

  • Sport Psychology: E-Mails Can Be More Powerful Motivators than Phone Calls
According to a recent study, e-mail messages are more effective than telephone calls for increasing long-term motivation.

  • Tennis: Hand Signals Improve Partner Communication in Doubles
Hand signals can be used to convey critical information between partners in a doubles tennis match.

  • Travel: Using Hotwire.com to Book Hotel Rooms for Team Trips

5. From the Archives

In every issue, I'll highlight a useful article from the PE Update Archives. The article will be available to non-members of the website for a week, and to members forever! This issue's article is:

SARDINE SOCCER

A passing game in which players pass the ball to constantly moving teammates while within the confusion of a confined area. A great lead-up game for physical education classes.
